Sleepless Stars over Hong Kong at Night

An old flame rekindled | Broken up and getting back together | Amnesia

Feng Xi woke up to find her life turned completely upside down.

The good news: everyone called her Mrs. Chen. The bad news: after saying so, they all gave her an awkward look and congratulated her on her “happy divorce” from Mr. Chen.

Everyone said she had been married to Chen Linzong for years and had a son and a daughter with him, but that the two were only together in name.

But she clearly remembered just celebrating her nineteenth birthday and pestering Chen Linzong to take her on vacation to Taiping Island. Her dream was to marry him, going from an impoverished student with nothing to her name to a wealthy wife who wanted for nothing in the Chen family, one of the oldest and most powerful families in Hong Kong.

So why would her twenty-seven-year-old self have lost her mind and divorced Chen Linzong?

-

The moment he got the news, Chen Linzong rushed back to Hong Kong, travel-worn and dusty.

He had no idea why Feng Xi had returned to the mansion on Jardine's Lookout, or why she insisted that he come back. After all, just fifteen days ago, she had looked at him as if he were her enemy and insisted there was no chance of reconciliation.

Chen Linzong assumed she would greet him with more cutting remarks or pressure him to hurry up with the divorce.

But when he opened the door, Feng Xi was sitting on the sofa with tears in her eyes. The moment she saw him, she touched the bandage wrapped around her head and pouted. “It hurts so much, darling. Blow on it for me.”

-

He had taught her well.

He taught her to read, to fight, and to play the game. His power was hers to rely on as she pleased, and he gave her a ladder to climb to the top.

But she seemed to have learned something else, too: love was no longer the whole of her life.

Chen Linzong realized he loved Feng Xi only after she stopped loving him.
