Beneath the Jade Terrace

The aloof flower on a high peak comes down from her pedestal / lighthearted, sweet romance

Spoiled, willful, fussy princess x cool, noble flower on a high peak

Pei Xuanji, a nobleman of the capital, was born to a distinguished family and was as radiant as the moon.

He was the flower on a high peak secretly admired by countless young women who didn't dare to speak of it.

Only Wen Ying knew how cold, heartless, and sharp-tongued he was in private.

They had been at odds since childhood, and she had always regarded him as an irritating thorn in her side.

One day, an accident forced the two of them to hide in a dark, cramped storage room.

But the old door suddenly collapsed, and dozens of passing palace attendants saw them standing pressed close together.

Once the incident came to light, rumors of their secret rendezvous in the palace spread everywhere.

Countless ridiculous embellishments and retellings followed, painting a vivid picture of the tangled romance between Wen Ying and Pei Xuanji.

Wen Ying couldn't defend herself, and she was furious.

But then another accident happened, and she hit her head.

The vexation that had been building in her heart for days became a muddled reality in her mind.

She exchanged glances with him at a palace banquet, overflowing with love, but her sweetheart didn't respond at all.

She tugged on his sleeve and coquettishly swayed it when no one was around, but he coldly pulled his hand away.

At last, unable to bear the hurt, Wen Ying blocked his path and hooked her little finger around his. Looking utterly pitiful, she said, "Brother Pei, how much longer are you going to stay mad at Yingying?"

Pei Xuanji turned to stare at her, his gaze cold and dangerous.

But then the girl, her face flushed bright red, boldly said, half embarrassed and half annoyed, "If you really want to kiss me that badly, then I'll let you. I won't dodge anymore, okay?"

After that accident, Pei Xuanji noticed that Wen Ying seemed to have become a different person.

To his face, she still competed with him at every turn, but in private she was delicate and soft-voiced, always looking at him with spring in her eyes.

At first, Pei Xuanji resisted her completely.

When he learned she'd hit her head, he could only hope she'd recover as soon as possible.

Later, as he pinned the blushing girl against a wall and kissed her over and over as if he could never get enough, he couldn't help wondering whether, if she never recovered, she would go on loving him like this forever.

Later still, Wen Ying recovered.

Across a sea of people, Pei Xuanji gazed deeply at her, but from beginning to end, she never gave him the slightest response.

Only then did he finally understand.

No one can remain on a heavenly terrace when the person they love no longer looks their way.
