A hotheaded, ambitious young female constable vs. a sharp-tongued man who plays the pig to eat the tiger
1) Pei Fuying grew up in the countryside. Ever since she was little, she had been obsessed with tales of demons and strange happenings, and they inspired her to resolve hundreds of mysterious cases when she grew up.
But when she came of age, her parents tried to betroth her to the uncouth farmer from the neighboring village, a man who did nothing but toil in the fields all day.
With her dreams about to slip away, Pei Fuying fled in a fury under cover of night. By a strange twist of fate, she ended up saving the county magistrate's life and won the chance to join the yamen as its only female constable.
She thought she would finally be able to make a name for herself, but the moment she arrived, she was assigned as an apprentice to a man who had gotten in through connections.
He was twenty, handsome as could be, but an empty suit. He spent his days loafing around. Aside from listening to music and watching plays, he slacked off whenever they were investigating a case.
He drew a salary paid by the people, yet never did a single thing properly. Pei Fuying felt nothing but contempt for him.
But out of respect for her master, and because he controlled her pay, she had no choice but to bow to Jiang Zigui, endlessly buttering him up with a string of "Master, Master."
Jiang Zigui rather enjoyed it. He decided his little apprentice wasn't entirely useless and that he could afford to toss her a treat now and then.
2) Lin'an City has been in turmoil lately, with one major case after another.
After Pei Fuying spent day and night investigating and chasing the culprit,
the culprit finally... fell from the sky??
Faced with a culprit who had landed right in front of them and passed out,
the master and apprentice stared at each other.
Jiang Zigui calmly said, "Why aren't you carrying the culprit back to the yamen?"
Pei Fuying scratched her head, stunned. "...Who's carrying them? You mean me?"
Jiang Zigui glanced at her, then calmly flicked his fan twice.
"Naturally, you," he said, then turned and walked away, vanishing into the distance in the blink of an eye.
Pei Fuying looked down at her small frame. "..."
She was so furious she could barely contain herself, but she hoisted the culprit onto her back and chased after him.
"Jiang Zigui, what kind of master are you, anyway?!"
3) Perhaps the heavens were smiling on Pei Fuying. She "caught" culprits more and more often, and her reputation in the capital grew. Whenever she returned with a culprit, someone in the yamen would call out, "Constable Pei has done it again! She's made another great achievement!"
As time went by, Pei Fuying began to wonder if she really was the legendary "child of fortune." Then a great demon seeking revenge trapped her atop a snowy mountain. No matter how loudly she cried for help, no one came. She was trembling with fear when
she saw someone walking through the snowstorm, his robes fluttering in the wind. He easily cut off the great demon's head, then slowly approached her, sword in hand and clothes stained with blood.
Wrapped up like a dumpling, Pei Fuying was rescued.
She was overwhelmed with gratitude and looked up at her savior in adoration.
As he came closer, she immediately spoke with utmost sincerity to his shoes. "Great hero, I will never forget your life-saving kindness. From now on, I will gladly serve you like a dog or a horse..."
After wriggling for a long while and putting all her strength into lifting her head,
she saw the handsome face of her long-missing master.
He thoughtfully pinched her chin and looked her over from side to side. Then he gave a soft laugh, his tone turning cold. "Pei Fuying, you might as well die of stupidity."
As sharp-tongued, cold, and heartless as ever.
Pei Fuying: ...
Wait a minute. Her master, that good-for-nothing who loafed around all day, was actually a demon hunter?!
2. Jiang Zigui had planned to spend his life idling around the yamen, hunting demons now and then and slacking off whenever he could.
That was until he got a loud, excitable little apprentice who wasn't very capable and spent all day figuring out how to get herself killed by demons.
Later, seeing how hard Pei Fuying was finding it to investigate cases, Jiang Zigui's heart softened,
and he began dropping her hints from time to time. He hadn't expected her to be so dense.
So Jiang Zigui simply sent every demon he had just captured straight to her,
never expecting that he would keep sending her more and more,
until, in the end, he even sent himself her way.
The super-short blurb: Basically, the male lead handles all the dirty, difficult, exhausting work of catching demons and solving cases. The female lead just gets to claim the credit, and in the end, she takes the male lead home too. A light, sweet little story.
The writing is meant to be funny and ridiculous. Just treat it as a silly, sweet little story.
A bit of demon catching, a bit of case solving.
Don't get hung up on the details.
Theme: Never give up easily
