Synopsis:
Good news came from the palace: the princess who had been left outside had been found. But there was bad news too. The princess had fallen on hard times and become a young widow, with a baby at her side.
Though Shen Shu had the title of princess, she had none of the privileges.
She endured scorn and bullying, living cautiously in the palace with her babbling daughter.
When a powerful, overbearing old matron bullied her and her daughter, the Crown Prince, who lived in the Eastern Palace, came to their rescue.
Shen Shu should have been grateful, but she discovered that the Crown Prince, her imperial brother, was actually her husband, who had been dead for three years!
Knowing that she and the Crown Prince were worlds apart in status, and that they were publicly brother and sister, she continued to play the obedient, well-behaved younger sister and find shelter beneath his protection.
She thought that if she kept their past hidden in her heart, no one would ever find out.
But she noticed that her imperial brother had been acting strangely lately.
He often stayed in her bedchamber, holding her daughter and teaching her to call him "Papa." He would also gaze at Shen Shu with deep, dark eyes and say, "Your voice reminds me of someone from my past."
Shen Shu's eyelashes trembled. Almost without thinking, she asked, "Who?"
The Crown Prince: "My wife."
Shen Shu: ...
.
Cui Yanzhi was the master of the Eastern Palace, noble and refined, a man of true virtue.
After falling into hardship, he was left blind and gravely wounded, and was saved by Shen Shu, an orphan girl.
Though he could not see her face, as they spent more and more time together, he gradually found himself drawn to her, falling into the kind of love he had always despised.
Later, people from the palace found him and healed his eyes. But by the time he returned to look for Shen Shu, bandits had ransacked the village, and she had vanished.
Three years later, he saw his younger imperial sister, who had been found and brought back to the palace.
She pretended not to know him, but her voice gave her away.
The graceful curves of her body had long been etched into his palm through their nights together, familiar down to his bones.
And the little girl following her, with features so much like hers.
She was the daughter of Cui Yanzhi and Shen Shu.
He didn't know why she had kept the truth from him and refused to see him.
But if she didn't want to see him, he would let her be for now. Who knew that as he waited, he would hear that she planned to marry someone else?
