For six years now, whenever people talked about “the Wayne family tragedy,” they no longer meant the murders of Thomas and Martha that left eight-year-old Bruce alone in the world. The main character in “the Wayne family tragedy” was a fifteen-year-old boy named Jason, Bruce’s first son. The first. Not the oldest, but the first son. A summer camp in Ethiopia turned into a kidnapping. Green hair. Purple suit. When those two things went together, everyone in Gotham knew what it meant. An eyewitness who had once seen Superman fly past with an injured person in his arms turned pale as he spoke into the reporter’s microphone. “He looked like every bone in his body had been broken. I don’t know. I didn’t think he could survive.” Jason survived in the end. But ahead of him lay unbearable pain in a hospital bed, a healthy life that no amount of physical therapy could restore, countless counseling sessions, and the shrill laughter that would haunt him forever. Even the luxury that came with the Wayne family’s money, and the protection and love of his father and family, could not change the painful life that awaited him. As everyone who heard the news expected, Jason never graduated from Gotham High. Even after six years, smoke still lingered in his nostrils, rising from the ruins in the desert, and his lungs still seemed to burn. Without warning, that smoke would sometimes drag Jason back to that nightmare of a day. Most of the time, he could pull his inhaler from his pocket in time, but on a few occasions he wasn’t fast enough. Every time, he thought it was finally over... But every time, he woke up again. Bruce was always at his bedside. The hands that had never trembled through countless major crises shook constantly with fear, as if his son would drift away on the wind if he let go. Jason knew his family loved him dearly, but sometimes their suffocating protection only made the smoke loom larger. Maybe his relationship with Slade had started with his selfish rebellion and desire to escape, too, because Slade was the only one who never treated him like a broken porcelain doll. He couldn’t even imagine how the Batfamily, who wanted nothing more than to keep him at home and send him to college, would react if they found out their highly protected boy was secretly training with Slade. Of course, when had the world ever gone the way Jason wanted? He could feel the moment he died for the second time. Reading guide: 1. The Death in the Family storyline happens, but Jason doesn’t die. He is severely injured and has to give up the mantle and return to an ordinary life. This is an AU. 2. There will be angst, but pain and itching are both necessary parts of a wound healing. In the end, it will all heal. 3. All characters will be very, very OOC. This story is absolutely centered on Jason, with very obvious favoritism. Don’t read if that bothers you. 4.
