"Authors carefully develop their protagonists, villains, and main characters... But for characters who appear only a handful of times, or don't appear at all, they usually do a slapdash job and brush them aside. That doesn't mean those characters don't exist. On the contrary, every time they appear, they serve a vital purpose: they're plot devices."
It took Hening Ting a while to process that, during the System's timely pause and silence.
"...You mean me?"
"You."
And so Hening Ting began his conscientious life of labor (crossed out) as a plot device.
To patch the bugs in this illogical yet logical world, he spends his days traveling through the timeline.
At the beginning of the month, he's the extra "girl" brought along to a mixer with the police academy group.
At the end of the month, Bourbon blocks his way under Scotland's rifle scope.
Yesterday, because some idiot criminal had an upset stomach, he had to toil under the scorching sun to deliver a "warning letter" to the Mouri Detective Agency.
Today, he's quaking under Gin's threat because he was late delivering "supplies."
The day before yesterday, he was a Tokyo citizen of the year, praised by everyone at the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department.
The day after tomorrow, he'll be a half-dead little thug from the Black Organization, fleeing for his life.
At the end of the year, Hening Ting and the System sat down to review the year:
As Hine, if he fails to complete the Organization's mission, he'll die.
As a good citizen, he has to identify and report threats to society, including but not limited to bombs and murderers. If anything goes wrong, he'll die.
As a little helper who covers for all kinds of idiot criminals, he's watched by the police and detectives both great and small. If he slips up, he'll die.
And no matter how many identities he takes on, he's stuck with one body. Even if he disguises himself perfectly, what if someone recognizes him?!
Hening Ting fell into deep thought.
System: "Wait! Put down the knife at your neck! We can talk this out!"
Help! What do you do when your plot device wants to flip the table?!

[Notes]
1. Every member of the police academy group survives.
2. The System and the protagonist's worldviews have nothing to do with the author's.
