Yan Jinyi spent his whole life playing the part of a beautiful, vicious idiot. When he finally sought revenge, he fell just short of success, lost his reputation, and was executed.
Only after death did he learn that in the future, the Canglan Sect would pay for all its misdeeds: its members would meet their just deserts, and the sect would fall apart.
When Yan Jinyi first heard this, he nearly laughed himself to death.
Then the Book Spirit told him the protagonist he was supposed to save was Jun Yanbai,
the rival who had once run him through with a sword.
Jun Yanbai was noble and upright, respectful to his elders and devoted to his fellow disciples. He was loyal to the rotten Canglan Sect and treated hypocrites and villains with the utmost courtesy.
Every one of these traits put him at odds with Yan Jinyi.
In his previous life, Yan Jinyi couldn't stand the sight of him and had picked countless fights with him, openly and behind his back. The genius Jun was the one person he could never bring himself to be nice to.
In the end, Jun Yanbai personally cut off Yan Jinyi's only chance to survive.
There was no need to talk about "saving" each other. If they could make it through another life without trying to kill one another, that would be a miracle.
The Book Spirit urged him, "You can win him over, save him, and stay by his side. Make him moved by what you do, change his opinion of you, and become a trusted friend..."
Yan Jinyi was unmoved.
Or he could take advantage of Jun Yanbai's weakness and kill him, then make a ghostly offering for him next year.
The vicious villain it had bound itself to was far too stubborn to sway, so the Plane Book Spirit had no choice but to play its trump card and tell him the truth: if the Son of Destiny lived, Yan Jinyi could live. If the Son of Destiny died, so would he.
Yan Jinyi: "…"
The pure-hearted Plane Book Spirit was far too innocent and naive to understand that there were a thousand ways to do a "good deed."
For Jun the Great Sage, who was supposedly soon to be betrayed, stabbed in the back, abused, and hunted down by the entire world before meeting a miserable end, Yan Jinyi arranged a whole series of treatments to "keep him safe."
They were called treatments, but really, they were meant to wreck him.
After witnessing his absolutely ruthless plans, the Book Spirit tried to tactfully reason with him: "Hey, isn't this a little extreme?"
Yan Jinyi didn't think so. "A stubborn illness calls for strong medicine."
"It'd be best if the treatment killed him. :)"
The Book Spirit fell silent.
After Yan Jinyi's whole scheme successfully shattered Jun Yanbai's Dao heart, he smiled calmly and prepared to face a death even more gruesome than the one he'd suffered in his previous life.
But the white-robed, jade-faced Asura Sage Lord dragged him into the Ghost Realm and forced a Spirit-Sealing Lock onto him. He made Yan Jinyi's life truly worse than death, day and night.
Yan Jinyi: "..."
Only then did the Book Spirit slowly remind him, "Hey, have you ever heard of someone 'turning dark'?"
Yan Jinyi: He really is crazy. :-)
The Book Spirit, already exhausted and out of love for the world: "Oh. Then you can try treating him with yourself."

4. Still working out the outline.
5. That's all for now. I'll add more if I think of anything.
