The Dead People's Shelter

One day, someone broke into the villa I was renting.

The intruder looked to be in his early twenties. He was wrapped in bandages all over and looked so pitiful, as if he'd been working day and night and was about to drop dead. My heart softened, and I didn't call the police. "It's cold at night in winter. You can leave tomorrow morning."

He didn't stand on ceremony. He even helped himself to most of the skewers I'd made for supper. I could only try to convince myself: Calm down. Don't pick a fight with a homeless person.

The next day, he still hadn't left.

In the warm winter sunlight, I finally got a good look at his face. He was incredibly handsome. What a shame not to take a few pictures for reference.

So I let him stay another day and pose as a model for my drawings.

He had to sit still, or I'd dock ten yuan each time he moved.

On the third day, I had to go back to school.

He said we were going the same way and insisted on coming with me. He even got me to buy him a train ticket.

As it turned out, we ran into robbers on the way, and I was the poor soul who got dragged off as a hostage.

Since he saved my life, I decided to take him in... I mean, it's not much different from adopting a stray cat or dog, right?

A full-time model and bodyguard in exchange for room and board. You couldn't find a better deal with a lantern!

So I asked him his name, and he said it was Zhi.

"Can I call you Xiao Zhi?"

"I guess that's fine?"

"Then can you turn into Pikachu?"

Years later, I asked him why he'd agreed to stay.

"That empty grave plot behind your house faces the sea, with spring blossoms all around. Can I have it?"

"Sure."

"Thanks."

"That'll be 180,000 yuan."

"?"
