Bai Ling, 29, formerly known by the codename Miz, is a core member of the White Tower’s Supreme Council, director-general of the APSC Asia-Pacific Sentinel and Guide Joint Administration, and an SSS-rank chief Sentinel under close surveillance by the Inspection Bureau.

Countless Guides long to be chosen by him, to become the director-general’s wife who can command the winds and rain, the sheath for the Federation’s sharpest blade.

A sought-after but highly dangerous Sentinel commander within the Tower, Bai Ling faces the doubts and concerns of the public and his colleagues by tirelessly going to the front lines himself. Seven years ago, during a special operation in a contaminated zone, the promising young Sentinel Bai Ling and his childhood friend and newlywed, Xia Siyao, took part in the mission together.

That day, the cheerful, warmhearted young Guide who was always teasing Bai Ling into smiling gave his life for the organization and the people, leaving his Miz with nothing but grief and longing.

From then on, the codenames Miz and Alano were sealed away for good. The elegant, witty, gentle, and considerate Miz never came back. The only one left in this world, along with that body, was Bai Ling: a terrifying Sentinel, a human weapon.

Over the past seven years, Bai Ling has risen to where he is today, retrieving the core crystals from thousands of heavily contaminated zones. But Restricted Zone 009, the death zone, remains a nightmare he can never enter.

His contamination index keeps rising, and the Tower has begun forcibly assigning him Guides whose compatibility with him is almost one hundred percent.

Only one young Sentinel, whose eyes and nose bear some resemblance to Xia Siyao’s, has lasted more than a month serving at the director-general’s side.

At last, Bai Ling became an extremely unstable factor.

One day, he received a highly classified, compulsory mission assignment:

That night, he dreamed of the beloved he had not seen in his dreams for a long time.

On the day the mission began, Bai Ling took only an engraved Colt. He opened the helicopter door and made a blind jump from thousands of meters in the air.

He encountered no mutated zombie horde. Amid the poisonous fog, he saw only a gigantic monster wandering forward in confusion.

His overloaded senses could clearly hear the monster whispering.

Bai Ling thought he must be going mad.

He could actually sense his beloved’s presence on the monster.

An ultra-low-frequency noise echoed through the endless poisonous fog, filling Bai Ling with pain and confusion.

1. Bai Ling is the gong, and Xia Siyao is the shou. Bai Ling is mixed-race, with black hair and blue eyes. His childhood nickname is Miz, a name Xia Siyao gave him when they read fairy tales together as children.
