If anyone had told Meng Nan before he turned thirty-three that he would end up rolling into bed with the kid next door, Meng Nan would have punched that person flat.

Midas, the beautiful and kind king of Phrygia, had long white hair as pure as snow, eyes deep blue as the sea, and a golden crown of thorns that symbolized his immense power and wealth.

After Dionysus's golden touch had hurt him deeply, Midas grew to hate all the riches of the world. He decided to retreat into the mountains and live a poor but busy, free, and beautiful life.

Every day, Midas clumsily herded sheep, sowed wheat, grafted olives, built grape trellises, and even brought home a little goat to raise.

The little goat had one broken horn and was lying by the stream, barely alive. Kind Midas couldn't bear to watch it die, so, at the hunting goddess's direction, he fed it his own blood until it grew up.

Miraculously, the orchard and wheat fields that Midas tended so haphazardly flourished. A clear sheen gradually appeared on the grapevines, and a flock of goats appeared from nowhere. Led by the little goat, they were docile and obedient, growing plump by the day.

At harvest time, Midas rolled happily in the wheat field and ran along the mountaintop with the flock. Just as he lifted the little goat up and prepared to cheer, the sweet, gentle creature in his arms suddenly vanished with a pop.

In its place stood Pan, the impossibly handsome god of the shepherds with his cloven hooves.

In Midas's eyes, Pan was unlike any other god.

He was mysterious and powerful. No one knew his origins or past, yet all forests, fields, and flocks were under his care.

He was gentle and quiet, living for ages in the deepest part of the Arcadian forest, carrying out his duties as a shepherd god in solitude and peace.

The gods all said that Pan was evil and ugly, bringing terror and war to the world, a scourge upon the gods. Only Midas knew that when the shepherd god's heart stirred, every beast in the Arcadian forest leapt for joy and flowers bloomed everywhere.

Zeus passed through Arcadia and noticed Midas, wearing a crown of grapevines and playing with the shepherd god in the mountains. At once, he fell in love with this human, more beautiful than Aphrodite.

Just as he was about to use the same old trick and turn into a golden bull to approach him, Pan's cloven hoof kicked off his manhood.

Afraid that Zeus would punish Pan, Midas was willing to give up his happy life and flee with him. But Pan merely licked his lover's deep blue eyes, trembling with fear, and murmured in a low voice that echoed through the empty valley:

"All gods were born beneath my hooves."

"Zeus is nothing but an insect."
