An accident turned Lin Na into the Ukrainian girl Galina, and all in all, she lived a pretty happy life. Born into a family of ballet dancers, she was able to dance without a care in the world, even in an era when many children went hungry.
Before the upheaval in Eastern Europe, her family sensed the coming crisis and transferred their assets abroad early. A few years later, the whole family immigrated to the United States, and at fourteen, Galina became an American girl.
Her happy life then began to unravel. With puberty, she grew rapidly: 165, 168, 170... By the time she was sixteen, she had reached 174 cm, spelling the end of her ballet career.
Even a company known for taking tall dancers couldn't accept a girl whose height was bound to reach 180 cm. Though Galina's height ultimately stopped at 178, she still lost her chance to stand onstage.
At eighteen, Galina suddenly lost the career she'd spent nearly ten years working toward. Her childhood sweetheart promptly got together with her younger sister, who was two years her junior. The people behind it all were the parents she trusted. Overnight, she lost everything: the career she loved and the romance she'd believed in without question. Oh, and she lost her family, too.
Galina suddenly felt that nothing mattered. With the compensation from her family and all her own savings, she set off to wander the world. But before she began, she went back to Kyiv to see her childhood friend.
It was also in Kyiv that she met the red-hot footballer Shevchenko. He said they'd known each other since childhood, but Galina had no memory of him at all. The way this footballer looked at her was anything but innocent. Well, the way she looked at his body wasn't exactly innocent either.
And so she stayed in Kyiv longer and longer, until spring came in 1999. At last, she waved goodbye to Kyiv and began her travels. From London to Paris, from Berlin to Madrid, Galina journeyed south, then west, until she reached Milan and fell in love with it in a second.
Galina decided to settle in Milan. She learned Italian and soon found work as a model. Then, during a fashion show, she ran into that footballer again.
Galina's scalp prickled. If the internet had been more developed back then, she really would have wanted to ask people online:
What should you do when someone you thought you'd never see again suddenly shows up in front of you? Wait, not an ex-boyfriend! They weren't even dating back then. A former, former partner? Yeah, that's probably the right way to put it.
Anyway, this person has suddenly appeared in front of you. How do you greet him politely without making things awkward? Or should you say nothing, pretend you don't know him, and slip away?!
Before Galina could figure it out, her Milanese love interest, Piersilvio Berlusconi, suddenly came over, kissed her on the cheek, put an arm around her shoulders, and warmly introduced her to Shevchenko.
"Galina, let me introduce you. This is the most important signing Milan have made this season. As it happens, he's from your hometown."
Galina wished she were on the moon right then. How was she supposed to get out of this love-triangle nightmare?!
