Agata Totti is Francesco Totti's twin sister. Though they share a mother, their fates could not be more different.
When her brother was born, the doctors predicted he would grow up to be a strong young man who could play soccer. His sister, meanwhile, was rushed to the ICU as soon as she entered the world, hovering near death several times.
To help their poor little girl survive, her parents named her Agata, hoping she would be healthy and have a safe, smooth life. To give her better access to treatment, they painfully entrusted Agata, not yet a year old, to relatives who were doctors in the United States. She stayed with them for eighteen years.
Totti had told his childhood friends since he was little that he had a sister, but nobody believed him except Nesta. The reason Nesta believed him was simple: he had seen a photo of Agata when she was fifteen, already a graceful young woman.
Only after Agata returned to Rome did Totti's friends believe that he hadn't been lying after all. He really did have a beautiful sister.
After eighteen years, the Totti twins had nothing in common. The brother was the typical case of brawn over brains, while his sister was less robust but much sharper.
Agata's natural intelligence, combined with her Chinese know-how, allowed her to earn a doctorate with ease at just eighteen, making her the youngest lecturer at Sapienza University of Rome.
Agata wasn't interested in soccer, but when she watched the Rome derby for the first time, she spotted Nesta and thought he was really handsome. After the match, Agata went to find Totti.
"Franco, do you have that guy's number?"
"Who?"
"The one wearing number 13."
As soon as he heard the number, Totti knew who his sister meant.
"I don't!"
"Okay! I'll go ask him myself!"
Totti: ?!!!
With a single phone call, Agata managed to get a date with Nesta. The choice of meeting place was a little bizarre, though. Nesta actually picked the library?! Fine, the library it was. If there was one thing Sapienza University had plenty of, it was libraries.
In the bitterly hostile soccer rivalry between Lazio and Roma, the couple dated peacefully for four years, until Nesta became Lazio's captain at twenty-two and their relationship faced a huge challenge.
They never said goodbye, but they did part ways in a very literal sense. Sick of Rome's crazed fans, Agata decided to put an end to their relationship herself.
Before the new season began in 2001, Agata gave Nesta one of the matching phones she'd made by hand.
"I'm going to Milan. If these matching phones ever go on sale, the one you have will be called the Nesta."
"Don't cry, Little Sang. I'm only naming it Nesta to commemorate this love that came to nothing."
Agata soon quit her job and went to Milan alone. She was going to make a fresh start.
Back in Lazio, no matter how wildly the extremist fans acted, the team's captain kept insisting, "I have a girlfriend. Her name is Agata. Don't get it wrong."
Just as everyone thought the couple had reached a completely bad ending, Lazio ran into financial trouble, and even their captain, previously considered untouchable, was put on the transfer market.
When Nesta landed at AC Milan, their love story finally got a sequel.
Years later, Nesta and Totti achieved financial freedom by investing in their wife and sister, respectively, and each bought one of the rival clubs, Lazio and Roma. Whenever the derby came around, the clubs' owners traded barbs from afar. Agata and her children became the one thing the whole city could agree on, and she made the forces that had once broken her heart pay dearly.
Don't worry, there will be no angst. Even the people who bullied them will pay for it in the end.
