[Pampered upbringing + fatherly older man + childhood friends + amnesia + coercive romance + marriage first, love later]
[Talkative little ray of sunshine X Fake-good-boy, unhinged Buddhist]
Ruan Qing has absolutely no sense of personal boundaries and is a super chatterbox. His favorite thing is crawling through the dog hole to visit his neighbor, Lu Zhiming, and chat.
Then he smears the other man's face with grease from the giant chicken leg he's already eaten halfway through.
His nonstop chatter landed him the perfect husband.
Handsome, rich, and powerful, just a little insane.
He likes to hit people with statues, then feed them sandalwood beads. Everyone in their circle sees him as a merciless killer and is too afraid to go near him. The only person who isn't afraid is Ruan Qing, whom he pampered from childhood. What's more, Ruan Qing can boss Lu Zhiming around as much as he likes.
Everyone says Ruan Qing didn't find himself a childhood-friend husband, but a father: domineering and overbearing, yet doting.
But who could have guessed that Lu Zhiming really would become his father?
After transmigrating, Ruan Qing becomes the fifth adopted son of the Lu family because he looks just like the family head's beloved.
And the head of the Lu family is none other than Ruan Qing's dear husband, Lu Zhiming.
When they meet, one has lost his memory, and the other is half-mad.
Ruan Qing has lost all his memories from before transmigrating, and all he feels toward the mercurial head of the Lu family is fear and unfamiliarity.
At every meal, he huddles in a corner, trying not to be noticed, afraid the family head will get upset and throw him to the crocodiles.
The other adopted sons treat him as an enemy and target him at every turn. The servants look down on him, too. They give him only one meal a day and dress him in the cheapest hemp clothes, which give him a rash as soon as he puts them on.
Lu Zhiming adopted them only to search for Ruan Qing, and he doesn't care about any of this.
After going hungry again, Ruan Qing sneaks through the dog hole to the shrine and devours every last offering on the altar.
As it happens, Lu Zhiming is right there in the shrine. Terrified, Ruan Qing turns and runs, trying to crawl back through the dog hole.
But the man grabs him and carries him to the altar table in front of the shrine. Holding his sandalwood beads, he strokes Ruan Qing's face, his eyes restrained yet wild.
"Baby, I've been praying for so long, and I've finally found you."
Ruan Qing thinks he's about to be fed to the crocodiles and cries in terror. "Dad, I'm sorry. I won't do it again."
That very night, Ruan Qing moves into the master bedroom. He's dressed in custom luxury pajamas and served soup made with wild ginseng worth a million. The decisive head of the family even kneels on the floor to wipe his feet himself.
The man who used to stand so high above everyone else kneels before him, humbly begging him not to leave.
Ruan Qing is even more frightened. He thinks his adoptive father has gone mad, and that his own death can't be far away.
Bonus scene
After Ruan Qing steals food, Lu Zhiming clips him to his waistband and keeps him on a leash.
He has to follow him while eating, sleeping, and using the bathroom. If Ruan Qing is out of sight for even a second, everyone in the household suffers.
Ruan Qing can't understand it. He only stole food once, so why is his adoptive father guarding him more closely than a thief?
And that's not all. He keeps getting handsy with him, calling it "fatherly love." Only after his waistband comes undone and he starts sucking Ruan Qing's toes does Ruan Qing realize what a load of crap this "fatherly love" is!
.
After losing his memories, Ruan Qing mistakes fear for dislike and resists Lu Zhiming's advances.
Every time, he stubbornly insists that he doesn't love Lu Zhiming.
Lu Zhiming asks, "Do you dare swear? Swear that you've never loved me."
"I, Ruan Qing, swear that I've never loved Lu Zhiming. If even one word of that is a lie, may I starve to death."
"No. I want you to swear on my life. Say, 'If Ruan Qing has ever loved Lu Zhiming, may Lu Zhiming starve to death.' Go on."
Ruan Qing: ...
