Hu Zheng is a fox spirit. After centuries of mandatory cultivation with the fox clan, he still has one course left to pass: go down the mountain, experience the mortal world, seduce a human, and win their true love.
Seduction is child's play for most fox spirits, but Hu Zheng is a corsac fox! And a male one, at that!
On the day he left the mountain, an elder patted his shoulder and said earnestly, "Zheng'er, if you get caught, whatever you do, don't tell them you're a fox spirit. Our clan has spent generations building a reputation since the time of King Zhou of Shang. We can't let your square face ruin it!"
Looking at his rectangular shadow, Hu Zheng felt the weight of his mission.
After entering the city, he tried every which way to meet women.
On the first day, his online dating match dumped him.
On the second day, the nightclub where he worked as a male model was shut down.
On the third day, a matchmaking agency scammed him during a blind date.
On the fourth day, he landed on the demon control bureau's wanted list.
He could only keep trying to seduce people while dodging the demon hunters who were closing in from every direction.
But every one of the many people he tried to seduce turned out to be a disaster once they met in person.
After much soul-searching, he resolutely walked into a plastic surgery clinic. He'd get a pointed chin and double eyelids. Not only would he become more beautiful, he'd have a new face to help him evade capture.
When he woke from the anesthesia, his face hadn't become more beautiful, but a handsome face was right in front of him: that of Hua Boye, head of the demon control bureau.
Hua Boye: "This illegal clinic for nonhumans is operating without a license. Are you a victim or an accomplice?"
Hu Zheng: "..."
"Not talking?" Hua Boye waved a hand. "Then that's evidence. Take him away!"
In the car, Hua Boye pinched Hu Zheng's square chin. "Why get plastic surgery? You look pretty cute."
Hu Zheng: "?"
At the demon control bureau, there was no skinning or pill extraction, nor was he turned back into a fox. Instead, Hu Zheng was handed a "City Nonhuman Resident Registration Form" and a set of practice exams.
"Fill out the form, study, and pass the test. Then we'll issue your license." Hua Boye held out his gold pen. "You can read, right?"
Hu Zheng flipped through the questions. The very first one stumped him:
What should you do after revealing your true form in front of a human?
A. Kill them and bury the body.
B. Knock them out, then kill them and bury the body.
C. Erase their memory and pretend nothing happened.
D. Use magic to make them fall for you and have a sweet romance.
Hu Zheng had just marked D when Hua Boye drew a huge X over it. "Wrong! You don't have a human-demon romance license. You're not allowed to date humans."
Hu Zheng's whole world came crashing down. He'd gone down the mountain to seduce people, but he couldn't seduce anyone without a license.
To get licensed and seduce people legally, Hu Zheng studied hard every day. But because his grades were so excellent and his appearance so square, he was chosen for a special appointment at the demon control bureau!
He'd planned to turn it down. He'd gone down the mountain to seduce people, not become a civil servant.
But one sentence from a bureau leader made him stay: "If you do well, the bureau will help you find a partner and solve your demon problem."
Hu Zheng's square face turned serious. "Then I request permission to date Comrade Hua Boye!"
Hua Boye: "?"
You damned fox! I was trying to help you, and you have your sights set on my man?!
Even after Hua Boye turned him down flat, Hu Zheng stayed at the bureau. It wasn't because he still had any hopes of winning Hua Boye over. Someone had told him that civil servants had an easier time finding partners.
Hu Zheng became a field officer at the demon control bureau. His daily work was to hunt demons all over the city and seduce people on the side.
Using his work as an excuse, he seduced three clients in succession:
1. A cool, abstinent zoologist
2. A beautiful, unhinged artist
3. A gloomy, obsessive rich second-generation heir
His seduction techniques were still clumsy, and his looks still left a lot to be desired. Yet all three acted as if they'd been bewitched and began pursuing him passionately at the same time.
Overjoyed, Hu Zheng prepared to pick one and start dating, afraid that waiting too long would lead to trouble.
But Hua Boye rejected his dating application. "If you're going to date anyone, it'll be me!"
Hu Zheng: "???"
