Every hundred years, the Snake Clan sheds its skin. Mo Qi, a snake demon, has a damaged spiritual root, and if he doesn't have dragon breath to protect him while shedding, he'll be turned back into his original form.
But dragon breath can only be transferred if the dragon willingly gives it.
And Mo Qi doesn't even know a single dragon.
As luck would have it, Ao Jiuzhu, director of the Dragon Clan's Human Affairs Office, is hiring an assistant.
Mo Qi has a bright idea: he pretends to be a dragon and sends in his resume.
After starting the job, he humbly asks his junior colleague Qing Lan, "How do I win a dragon over?"
Qing Lan offers her advice: "Flirt with him!"
Following her instructions, Mo Qi slips and spills coffee on Ao Jiuzhu's clothes every day, pretends to feel weak and needs Ao Jiuzhu to help him during overtime, and fakes a sprained ankle at team-building events so he can fall into Ao Jiuzhu's arms.
Ao Jiuzhu gives him a bottle of calcium supplements. "You're calcium deficient. You need to take these!"
Furious, Mo Qi chews up the whole bottle.
Qing Lan offers more advice: "Play hard to get!"
Mo Qi suddenly understands. He starts acting aloof, making coffee with a cold expression while secretly watching Ao Jiuzhu. After a week of observation, Ao Jiuzhu seems not to have noticed his little schemes at all.
"That dragon is impossible to sway!" Mo Qi is close to tears.
"Maybe he's just naturally dense. You should be more direct," his junior says, also feeling stumped.
That night, Mo Qi slips into Ao Jiuzhu's bed.
Ao Jiuzhu lashes out with a dragon's tail, sending Mo Qi flying into the wall. "What are you doing?"
Stuck in the wall, Mo Qi gives an awkward laugh. "I'm cold."
The next day, Ao Jiuzhu gives Mo Qi an electric blanket.
Just as Mo Qi, utterly disheartened, is about to try pursuing another dragon, Ao Jiuzhu disappears.
Mo Qi transforms into a snake and rushes into the Dragon Pool to rescue Ao Jiuzhu, who is on the verge of death. Ao Jiuzhu looks at him in confusion. "Who are you?"
The dragon has amnesia!
"I'm your mate!" Mo Qi says with a sly smile.
"Why would my mate be a snake?" Ao Jiuzhu asks, baffled.
"If two hearts are bound together for all eternity, what do the divisions between species matter?" Mo Qi says with heartfelt sincerity.
At the same time, he grumbles to himself: A dragon has nine sons, and every one of them is a mongrel. As a dragon, how dare you question your mate's species?
The deception goes smoothly. On the day Mo Qi sheds his skin, Ao Jiuzhu transfers dragon breath to him three times in a row.
Mo Qi not only survives, but also ends up with another little life in his belly.
Ao Jiuzhu is overjoyed. He's so happy that his memories start coming back.
Mo Qi breaks out in a sweat: If the dragon finds out he tricked him into marriage, this snake is as good as dead!
So he runs away with the baby...
