Duan Ran and Song Jingshuo had been at each other's throats since they were three, but somehow, when they were twenty-one, they fell for each other.

Though they married because of the baby, their life together was still loving. Song Jingshuo handed over his entire monthly salary, and even when they were at their poorest, he still bought Duan Ran bottles of Paris Water that cost eighteen yuan each.

But their happiness didn't last. Just as Song Jingshuo's career was starting to take off, Duan Ran and their child were deliberately run down by a rival. As he lay dying, he was still clutching the engagement ring Song Jingshuo had given him.

When he opened his eyes again, he was straddling Song Jingshuo, pinning him against a desk.

Before he could finish, Duan Ran's tears splashed onto his face.

His eyes were as red as a rabbit's, with teardrops clinging to his lashes, on the verge of falling.

He had been so fierce just moments ago, but now he looked like a cat abandoned in the rain.

Duan Ran had never cried like this in his entire life.

His usual arrogance was gone. His voice was soft and hoarse. "A-Shuo, our baby... is gone."

Then he fainted.

After that, Duan Ran stopped getting into fights.

Every day, he folded his school uniform into a tiny bundle and held it in his arms, head bowed as he hummed lullabies. When people laughed at him, he didn't talk back. He just hugged the uniform tighter.

Song Jingshuo laughed and called him a sissy, but Duan Ran looked up at him with red-rimmed eyes. "A-Shuo, look. Isn't our baby cute?"

He thought Duan Ran had gone mad.

But when he saw that Duan Ran had grown so thin that his collarbones were sunken, and his uniform hung loosely from his frame, Song Jingshuo could think of only one thing.

How could he get Duan Ran to put on some weight?

Later, Duan Ran tossed and turned at night, calling out "Xiao Bao" over and over. He tugged at Song Jingshuo's collar and burrowed into his arms, begging him to have another child with him.

Song Jingshuo clenched his fists and gritted his teeth as he pinned Duan Ran to the bed.

"Why do you need a baby? Isn't having me enough?"

Bonus Scene

After Song Jingshuo and Duan Ran got together, they had an adorable child named Xiao Bao.

Xiao Bao never cried or fussed, and he always clutched Duan Ran's hand with his little fingers. His big, dark eyes would look up at them as he smiled.

When he got a little older, he started throwing away his own diapers and taking out the trash.

Every now and then, he'd puff out his little chest and toddle over to them, declaring, "I'm a big boy!"

It was this adorable child who made them think about having another one.

So whenever Song Jingshuo got home from work, he'd ask, "Baby, did you take your folic acid today?"

Duan Ran would always nod obediently. "I did."

Once, Xiao Bao overheard them. He looked curious and asked in his babyish voice, "Papa, what's folic acid?"

Song Jingshuo pinched Xiao Bao's cheek. "It's something that lets your little daddy give you a little brother or sister."

Xiao Bao: "So if he takes it, I'll get a little brother or sister?!"

"That's right."

Xiao Bao clenched his little fists. "Then I'll remind Little Daddy from now on!"

Duan Ran blushed with embarrassment and looked at the man with watery eyes. "Song Jingshuo! Stop teaching the kid bad things!"

Bonus Scene Two

Back then, Song Jingshuo and Duan Ran had Xiao Bao by accident.

They hadn't planned for a baby or gone for prenatal checkups. By the time they found out, Xiao Bao already had a heartbeat.

Thankfully, the tests showed that he was perfectly healthy.

But Duan Ran was in poor health, had a narrow birth canal, and Xiao Bao was breech. The birth left Duan Ran with serious injuries.

Until Xiao Bao turned five, Song Jingshuo was meticulous about contraception. It was Duan Ran who couldn't wait any longer.

"Honey, let's have another baby. Xiao Bao must be so lonely all by himself."

Before the man could answer, Xiao Bao, who had gotten up to use the bathroom and happened to be passing by, rushed in.

"A little sister! Papa, I want a little sister!"

Ever since Duan Ran decided to have a second child, Xiao Bao had taken it upon himself to remind him to take folic acid.

He even replaced the fruit-flavored hard candies in his Milk Dragon backpack with folic acid.

His classmates gathered around curiously. "Xiao Bao, why aren't you sharing your candy today? I want some, Xiao Bao! Your candy looks so yummy!"

"This isn't candy!" Xiao Bao said in his babyish voice, striking Ultraman's signature protective pose.

His classmates tilted their heads and blinked. "If it's not candy, then what is it?"

Xiao Bao: "It's folic acid! It's a magic treat that gives you a little sister!"

His classmates: "Wow! Magic!!!"

"Baby, after all this time praying, I've finally found you."

Ruan Qing thought he was about to be fed to the crocodiles. He cried in terror. "Daddy, I'm sorry. I won't do it again."

That very night, Ruan Qing moved into the master bedroom. He was dressed in custom luxury pajamas and served soup made with a hundred-year-old wild ginseng root worth millions. The decisive, ruthless family patriarch even knelt to wipe his feet himself.

The man who had always been high above everyone else knelt on one knee, humbly begging him not to leave.

Ye Qinze's hand paused.

Without looking up, he continued applying ointment, his voice muffled. "It'll be over soon."

Yu Qiu said nothing more. He huddled in Ye Qinze's arms for warmth, drowsy and half-asleep as he mumbled, "That stupid System..."

Ye Qinze looked down at the person in his arms.

Yu Qiu's lashes were still damp, his cheeks flushed. He slept like a soft, sweet little cake, completely defenseless.

Ye Qinze watched him for a long time, then sighed softly.

"Just hold on a little longer."

They kept up the act during the day and spent tender nights together. Yu Qiu grew more and more dependent on Ye Qinze, while Ye Qinze's gaze grew more and more intense.

The day the System disappeared, Ye Qinze bent down in front of everyone and lifted Yu Qiu off the ground.
