Where Is Your Mountain?

Kang Weiyue was the legitimate daughter of Suzhou's richest family, cherished and pampered, yet also a carefully raised songbird, with every smile and frown tied to her family's interests.

Until the day by the lotus pond when she slipped and fell into arms scented with medicinal herbs, meeting a pair of eyes as brilliant as the stars.

Song Qinghe was a wild camellia, growing freely in the mountains. She knew nothing of the rules of high society. All she could do was play cheerful tunes on a leaf and bring over wildflowers still beaded with dew.

She saved Kang Weiyue's life, and quietly opened the door to her frozen heart.

"People are equal," Song Qinghe said. "Miss, you're not a bird in a cage. You're a phoenix, meant to fly toward your own mountains."

But worldly convention and family-arranged marriage followed like shadows.

Kang Weiyue pushed her away with her own hands. "We're worlds apart. Let us part here."

But Song Qinghe, eyes red, pinned her against the hot spring pool, her breath scorching. "Your eyes say you can't bear to let me go."

Later, the haughty young lady of the Kang family cast aside her riches, took the country girl's hand, and never looked back.

"Qinghe," she said with a tearful smile, "where are your mountains?"
