He Zhaoyue recently did something huge:

She begged her father, the emperor, to marry her off to the newly appointed top scholar, Kang Wenjing.

The capital was in an uproar. The scholar was certainly impressive, but she came from a humble family. How could she be worthy of the emperor's most favored princess?

Kang Wenjing herself was so terrified she nearly fainted, refusing with all her might. Help! She's a woman! She'll lose her head for deceiving the emperor!

Then, on their wedding night, the red veil was lifted. Looking at the "prince consort" before her, whose face had gone ashen and who looked ready to smash her head against the ground, He Zhaoyue smiled.

She advanced step by step, and lightly hooked a finger under the other's chin. "My consort, what are you so worried about?"

"I already knew you were a woman in disguise when you sat the imperial examination."

"And not only that. I was the person you saved in the mountains all those years ago."

"You were also the one I picked out at the examination to be my husband."

Kang Wenjing: "!!!" So this wasn't some calamity from out of nowhere. It was a life debt... and she'd been roped into paying it back?
