Sweet and Silky

Shen Qing had only two things in her life: slaughtering pigs and watching A Su.

She was the loudest butcher's daughter at the market. One stroke of her knife, and she could separate lean meat from fat with perfect precision.

A Su was the mute girl at the pastry shop on the street corner. She was quiet, but her pastries smelled so good they could steal your soul.

At first, Shen Qing just craved those flaky pastries.

Later, somehow, the first character she learned to recognize was "su." What she dreaded most was seeing the peddler smile at A Su, and what she wanted most was to scoop the sweetest spoonful of sugar from her own bowl into A Su's.

But how could two girls be together?

Shen Qing couldn't figure it out, so she went to ask A Su.

A Su said nothing. She simply scooped up a spoonful of her own tofu pudding and fed it to her.

Sweet or savory, none of it mattered anymore.
