The Merchant’s Daughter Dares to Defy Her Superiors

Everyone in Linzhou City knew that Su Qingyan, daughter of the vice magistrate, was cool and self-possessed, with a far-reaching reputation for her literary talent. Everyone also knew that Jing Fangshu, daughter of a wealthy merchant, was carefree and unruly, and carried an air of "vulgar money."

They met at a poetry gathering. Su Qingyan thought her vulgar and showy; Jing Fangshu thought her pretentious and affected. Whenever they met, they argued, and parted on bad terms.

A sudden family catastrophe sent Su Qingyan tumbling from the clouds. Her father was convicted and exiled, her friends and relatives kept their distance, and all her former glory vanished like a dream.

Only Jing Fangshu, her former "sworn enemy," ignored the world's judgment and risked being implicated to reach out when Su Qingyan was at her most desperate. "Don't be afraid. I'm here."
