The Moon Over Chang'an, a Love Misplaced

Shen Qinghuan was the daughter of a military family, proud and strikingly beautiful. As a girl, she fell in love at first sight with Xiao Jingyuan, the crown prince, and gave her heart to the wrong man. To help him ascend the throne, she poured her family's military strength and wealth into his cause, gave up the security of her sheltered life, and went to war at his side, shielding him from countless political plots and deadly threats from the jianghu. She believed that a sincere heart would be rewarded with lasting love, and looked forward to a peaceful realm and a grand wedding procession. But she never knew how merciless imperial power could be. Once Xiao Jingyuan became emperor, he grew wary of the Shen family's military might and feared they would overshadow him. He fabricated a charge of treason and slaughtered her entire family. Their vows of eternal love meant nothing to him. To please his favorite consort, he stripped Shen Qinghuan of her position as empress, imprisoned her in the Cold Palace, and crushed every hope she had left. In a single night, she lost her family and was left broken in body and spirit. Her despair cut through every last tie of affection, stripping away all her tenderness and innocence. For years, she lay low in the Cold Palace, plotting every move and patiently building her strength for revenge. She exploited divisions at court and stirred up turmoil in the harem, steadily dismantling Xiao Jingyuan's imperial power and exposing both his favorite consort's false virtue and the truth behind the Shen family's wrongful conviction. Once she held power over the court and had the advantage firmly in hand, she calmly let it all go. The realm remained unchanged, and the moon still shone over Chang'an, but there was no longer a young man who loved her. At last, she shed her finery and left alone, far from the imperial city that had imprisoned her all her life. She had let down no one in the world, except the younger self who had once loved with all her heart.
