Synopsis

A chronicle of three generations of the Shen clan's imperial guards. It begins in the twenty-fifth year of Hongwu and ends in the ninth year of Jiajing, spanning 138 years and twelve reigns, from Hongwu to Jiajing. The founder, Shen Lie, rose from the ranks of the guards. His family motto was, “With a blade in hand, know whom to strike, and know when to sheath it.” He weathered the flames of the Jingnan Campaign and laid the foundations for the family's hereditary office. His son, Shen Chen, was upright and brave. During the Tumu Crisis, he defended the capital and upheld the law, refusing to ally himself with treacherous officials. His grandson, Shen Yan, was affable on the outside but principled within. Through the turmoil of the Zhengde era and the Great Rites Controversy, he rose to become Commander of the Embroidered Uniform Guard and was named Junior Guardian of the Crown Prince. All three generations stayed true to their principles. They never framed loyal officials or sided with the powerful and corrupt. They witnessed the rise and fall of the Great Ming firsthand, bearing witness to the changing fortunes of the realm.

Interested in Ming Dynasty History. Any Books That Aren't Melodramatic or Historically Distorted?

No melodrama, no distortion of history, and preferably no authorial agendas slipped in. Rebirth and transmigration are both fine. Are there any interesting Ming dynasty novels that aren't ridiculously over-the-top?
