Synopsis

I transmigrated to the rout at Shanghai in 1937 and became a second lieutenant staff officer in the 88th Division, with death seeming inevitable. Japanese bayonets were at my back, and panicked, scattered soldiers fled all around me. No one knew I was an undercover Communist Party member, let alone that my mind held the entire history of World War II and The Art of War. While everyone else fled, I struck back! I led thirty battered survivors into Wolf Valley. In our first battle, we wiped out a Japanese vanguard squad and seized our first cache of ammunition. While others fought to the last man defending their positions, I used a sixteen-character guerrilla strategy: encircle the enemy and strike their reinforcements, use pincer movements, and leapfrog across the battlefield. I kept the Japanese running in circles. From a battered platoon of thirty men to a field division that struck terror into the enemy; from harassing raids to wiping out an entire Japanese regiment. For eight years, I fought a duel to the death with Major General Masao Kuroda, a Japanese officer well versed in military strategy. He studied all my tactics, but he could never learn the indomitable spirit of the Chinese people. Over those eight years, eight thousand brothers were buried on Cangwu Mountain. I laid every one of my comrades to rest with my own hands. When the Japanese surrendered in 1945, fewer than two hundred survivors came down the mountain with me. Our unit was disbanded, and our names never made it into the official histories. But when later generations opened the Japanese military's top-secret archives, they discovered to their astonishment: An army group that never existed had once struck terror into the hearts of the entire Japanese army in North China!
