During the Jingyun era of the Tang Dynasty, the empire flourishes in dazzling splendor, yet strange events plague the darkness.

Newlywed brides keep dying with smiles on their faces on their wedding nights. Their faces are rosy, their bodies bear no marks, and only the red candles burn on. Su Wuming, a county lieutenant in Chang’an, has a keen eye for the uncanny and spots clues amid the apparent calm. Lu Lingfeng, a highly skilled Zhonglang General who believes in strict rules, initially scoffs at talk of “supernatural forces.”

A bizarre case known as “Death by Red Candle” binds these two men of very different temperaments together. The exceptionally skilled Fei Jishi, the meticulous Pei Xijun, the quick-witted and courageous Yingtao, and the loyal Xue Huan are drawn into the case one after another.

The threads of the Brocade Pavilion, the hairdresser’s rouge, the strange candles burning at midnight... Behind these seemingly unrelated clues lie layers of deadly traps. From “Whispers by Candlelight” to “Mystery in the Beast Garden,” from “The Paper Doll’s Grievance” to “Evil in the Mirror,” twelve strange cases offer twelve mirrors reflecting the human heart.

Su Wuming follows every thread to uncover the malice beneath each deception, while Lu Lingfeng cuts through the fog with his blade, seeking the light of the law. From mutual hostility to entrusting their lives to each other, the two set out together on a thrilling journey to uncover the truth and clear the wrongfully accused in Chang’an, the dazzling capital where light and shadow intertwine.
