The Dark River of Memory: Donovan

In the near-future metropolis of New Harbor, memories are no longer just imprints on the mind: they have become assets that can be precisely edited. The company ClearTrace controls the core technology, deep neural weaving (DNW), which precisely erases painful memories that have become too much to bear for paying clients. Donovan Shaw, code-named “Memory Cleaner,” is the company’s finest “weaver.” Skilled and restrained, he uses cold instruments and an even colder resolve to excise the tumors of other people’s pasts, all while evading the childhood trauma buried deep within himself.

After what seems to be a flawless memory-erasure procedure, his client, the gentle Rachel Moran, a patient with post-traumatic stress disorder, wakes with a completely different expression. A strange, chilling voice speaks through her lips, uttering a secret phrase from the darkest memory of his childhood: “The robin in the wheat field is dead, Dr. Shaw. Did you do it?”

Words that should exist only in the depths of the memory he personally erased strike Donovan’s carefully constructed psychological defenses like an ice pick. Driven by terror, he investigates further. Using an illegally implanted neural interface, he ventures into the dark abyss of consciousness and uncovers a horrifying truth the company has deliberately concealed: memories “deleted” by DNW technology have not vanished. Like wreckage sunk to the ocean floor, they gather, merge, twist, and mutate in the deepest layer of humanity’s collective consciousness, a dark realm known as the “Memory Sediment Layer.” Every “cleanup” adds fresh nourishment to this graveyard of consciousness.
