Shadows of Spies Beneath the Red Makeup

In 1937, the smoke of the Battle of Shanghai swept across the Huangpu River, staining Shanghai's neon lights blood-red. She was Shen Ruoyan, a translator embedded in the Japanese military's intelligence department. Every line she typed with her fingertips concealed a deadly code. He was Lu Jingyuan, an "idler" in the General Affairs Office of the Wang Jingwei puppet government. Beneath his languid air and every casual gesture lay the cold gleam of a gun barrel and an unspoken concern.

An unexpected exchange of intelligence brought two lives that should have run parallel crashing together amid the flames of war. She thought he was a traitor lost in wine and women, but in the dead of night, amid a hail of bullets, she saw his cuff stained with blood as he protected her. He was certain she was a docile pawn kept by the Japanese, yet the moment she passed along false intelligence, he understood the devotion to their country that flashed in her eyes.

In this chaotic age, the world was a chessboard. They were each other's undoing, and also each other's only light. As the fog surrounding their identities lifted layer by layer, and love and faith came face to face at gunpoint, Shen Ruoyan finally understood that the warmth Lu Jingyuan had left on the buttons of her qipao had long surpassed every vow to share life and death. And the letter he kept hidden in his briefcase, never sent, had always ended with the words: "When the land is at peace, I will join you in the heart of spring."

With flames of war raging and their red wedding finery stained with blood, they embraced amid layers of espionage. With love as their blade and affection as their armor, they carved out a path of their own through the dark night of their nation's peril, a road strewn with thorns and glory.
