From Alchemy Assistant to Ghost Tamer, I Conquer the Underworld

In ancient times, Lin Xiao was a low-ranking alchemy apprentice in the Xuandan Sect. His goofy personality and love of slacking off made his fellow disciples think he was a good-for-nothing, while the sect’s young master, Murong Hao, grew jealous of him. By chance, Lin Xiao obtains an Emotion Collection and Exchange System, which can collect the fear ghosts inspire and the reverence people feel, then exchange them for ghost-controlling arts and ghost servants. Just then, hauntings break out near the sect. Murong Hao deliberately sends Lin Xiao to scout ahead, hoping the ghosts will kill him. Lin Xiao uses the System to tame his first ghost servant, Qing Ling, and resolve the haunting, only to be falsely accused by Murong Hao of “colluding with evil spirits.”

From then on, Lin Xiao uses his goofy antics to deal with the sect’s attempts to make life difficult for him, while collecting emotions by resolving supernatural incidents, from corpses rising in villages to evil spirits haunting the city lord’s residence. He upgrades his ghost-controlling abilities and tames ghost servants such as Chi Yan and Xuan Bing. Along the way, he wins the affection of Su Wanqing, a gentle medicine apprentice who is saved after being haunted by a ghost; Chu Lingyan, a fiery concubine who escapes a prince’s pursuit; and Ye Ningshuang, a proud and aloof Daoist apprentice from a family of ghost tamers.

As Lin Xiao grows more popular, Murong Hao joins forces with the thousand-year-old evil spirit Blood Fiend, hoping to destroy the sect and frame Lin Xiao. Lin Xiao exchanges for the Yin-Yang Ghost-Taming Formation and joins forces with his ghost servants and the heroines to defeat Blood Fiend and expose Murong Hao’s scheme. He becomes the Xuandan Sect’s “Grandmaster of Ghost Taming” and gets face-slapping revenge on everyone who looked down on him.
