Lanterns Dance Along the Huai River

Through nearly a century of history, from the late 1920s through Reform and Opening Up and into the new era, this novel follows three generations of the Yu family, represented by Yu Wanjin, Yu Huaihai, and Yu Chuanqi, as they develop and pass on the Huai River Flower-Drum Lantern tradition while finding new ways to innovate.

The story begins with the Yu family's grudge against the bandit Huang family: the murder of a father and the theft of a wife. At first glance, this tangled feud seems to drive their ambitions, as one generation after another carries on the families' hatred. Yet, as society changes and human nature cycles between good and evil, the Huai River Flower-Drum Lantern tradition, a shared part of the local people's heritage, eventually becomes the bridge that ends the families' generations-old feud. The descendants of the bandit Huang family seize the opportunities of a changing age and turn Jiu Li River, once plagued by floods, into a national 5A-rated scenic area. Driven by the new-era concept of combining culture and tourism, the Huai River Flower-Drum Lantern tradition also finds a home in a private tourist resort founded by Huang descendants, becoming a highlight of local tourism. Cultural tourism brings new life to rural revitalization and raises local farmers' incomes.

Through a sweeping portrayal of nearly a century of family history, conflict, and development for the Yu and Huang families, this novel depicts both the natural disasters brought by the Huai River and the protagonists' complex web of love and hate. It recreates, across time and place, the arduous journey and glorious history of the Huai River Flower-Drum Lantern tradition, making it a rich cultural epic rooted in the Huai River region.
