Bring your seasoned-reader skills: dodge landmines, ignore things, and so on. These are generally books I’ve read, but I can’t promise I finished them. Plenty of promising works have fallen apart after a strong opening, and there are too many to count. I don’t mind abandoned works, unless they stop at a crucial point. If all a story does is have the protagonist show off and slap people in the face, forget it. We’re all adults. Stories with warped values are out, too. If our values don’t match, let’s not ruin each other’s day. The world is big enough. I’m a bit of a hothead, but I don’t think those women deserve to be raped as revenge. That would make us no different from them. I hope the characters have some sense, whether they’re protagonists, villains, or supporting characters. I can lower my standards if I have to, but don’t treat readers like fools. I don’t mind harem stories, but if you insist on objectifying women, adding them mindlessly, or pushing romances just for the sake of it, the back button is right there. No fantasies involving children in any form. That’s monstrous, and even joking about it is unacceptable. Stories involving older brothers’ wives or incestuous fathers aren’t welcome either. No need to go to Germany; you’ll get to prison faster on your own. Jokes and memes are fine, but if you take them too far, the quality of the story suffers. It’s hard to find books these days, and it’s just as hard to find ones that keep their characters sensible and their values sound. Let’s encourage each other. Reasons I won’t read a book: The logic doesn’t hold together; The characters’ intelligence or personalities make no sense; There are too many coincidences, no foreshadowing, or constant face-slapping just to show off; The values don’t align with mine; The author indulges themselves too much.
