Synopsis

During the Jingtai era of the Ming dynasty, Shen Yan, a Ministry of Rites director, is caught up in an examination scandal that nearly destroys his family. Three masters use an ancient formation to send him more than five hundred years into the future. When he awakens, he is a university student with no prospects in a modern city.

Once he navigated the imperial court; now he lives at a tutoring center. Shen Yan plans to find a way to earn a living, but discovers that a child's silence, a parent's anxiety, and the schemes behind a smile are harder to read than memorials to the throne.

A book called Record of Seeing Through Delusion lets him glimpse the seven strands of obsession deep in the human heart: lust, competition, control, hatred...

As he investigates one strange incident after another, he discovers that the unfinished slaughter plot from the Ming dynasty has put down new roots in a city more than five hundred years later.
