After Breaking Off My Engagement to the Fourteenth Prince

On the day my engagement was called off, the Fourteenth Prince stopped me in the street. “Mei Zhiwei, who do you think you are? You’re breaking off our engagement. Do you think anyone in the capital will still dare to marry you?” I said nothing. Later, a distant cousin came to stay at our estate. He had refined features and kept to himself. He knew embroidery, could fight, and wore a rough-hewn jade pendant at his waist. On our wedding night, he unclasped the pendant and placed it in my palm. “Fifteen years ago, on the back hill of Tanzhe Temple, you gave this to me.” Fireworks filled the sky outside the window. I clutched the stone, and suddenly my eyes were wet.
