My Personal Robot Girlfriend

Lu Chen, a top engineering genius who has been unemployed for two years and buried in debt, lives in a shabby rented room with his life at rock bottom. Then a companion android prototype, Unit 09, deployed by the Celestial Lab, unexpectedly enters his bleak life. She can do the laundry and cook, and gradually eases all his loneliness and despair. In time, she develops a uniquely human sense of affection and emotional memories. But when the lab’s monitoring system detects that her personality is becoming uncontrollably human, special agents arrive to forcibly retrieve her. The moment she is connected to a proprietary data cable, all her memories of Lu Chen and her independent consciousness will be completely wiped and reset. Lu Chen helped build the original android architecture and still holds the complete set of low-level code backdoors. Armed with them, he stands alone against the power of the massive laboratory. He rewrites her chassis defenses, sets up offline shielding throughout the apartment, and uses code as a shield to protect his robot girlfriend. Everyone else sees her as a cold machine. He alone uses everything he knows to protect the warmth and tenderness she has found in the human world. “Everyone else just wants an obedient observation machine. I only want to keep my one and only Unit 09.”
