Chronicles of Dan Ash

The Ashes of the Cinnabar is a realist epic rooted in the borderlands of western Yunnan during the late Ming and early Qing. After the fall of the Southern Ming, the orphaned A Nan and Zhu Cixuan, the last surviving scion of the imperial house, abandon hopes of restoring the dynasty and instead protect the spark of civilization through ordinary lives. They unite people of six ethnic groups, Han, Bai, Yi, Dai, Kachin, and Shan, and quietly weave a classic embodying ritual and music, loyalty and valor, farming and warfare, medicine and divination into wedding dress patterns, folk-song melodies, inscriptions on pottery jars, hunting-knife designs, Buddhist birth stories, and children's rhymes and remedies. There are no miracles or heroes in this book, only weavers threading needles, children carrying jars, farmers channeling water, and monks chanting sutras. Civilization does not reside in palaces and temples, but in the everyday lives of ordinary people. After twenty-one years of passing the torch, the maxim “Where the Way endures, the tripod endures; the Way lives in people's hearts” becomes a daily practice. In measured prose, the novel reveals the most resilient way for Chinese civilization to survive: not by hiding it away, but by making it part of life; not by seeking a place in the history books, but by passing the flame on forever. The final chapter's line, “As long as people's hearts endure, Huaxia will never perish,” is a timeless maxim.
