Crisis at the Night Banquet: Painted Bones

Near the end of the Southern Tang dynasty, as the state teetered on the brink of collapse, Gu Hongzhong, a court painter, received a secret order from the last ruler, Li Yu: sneak into the mansion of the powerful official Han Xizai at night and uncover the truth behind rumors of rebellion. Thus began a life-or-death mission. He had to dance on the edge of a blade, recording with his eyes every subtle expression and undercurrent among the 49 people at the banquet. When Gu Hongzhong turned that thrilling night into an immortal masterpiece, he not only deceived the suspicious ruler but also saved Han Xizai’s life. This was a deadly contest between painting appearances and capturing true essence, and a hauntingly beautiful elegy for a troubled age.
