The Chang’an Secrets: Water Reflects in Silence

Chang'an has four bureaus: Pre-Hearing, Wind, Water, and Incense. Now that the Pre-Hearing Bureau is gone, Stillwater is the only eye in Chang'an that can once again see the past. A string of bizarre drowning cases appears in Chang'an, each with "a reflection that leaves no trace." Shen Wanwen, a Reflection Officer in the Water Bureau, is ordered to investigate. She can hear the fragments of sound in water and infer the truth of what sank beneath it from the faintest ripples. But as the traces in the reflections slip further out of control, what she sees in their depths is not only evidence deliberately sealed away, but also a secret swallowed by the water ten years ago, and fragments of a fate tied to her own. The closer she gets to the truth, the more she understands: Water can reflect everything, but it cannot reveal the human heart. And the voices swallowed by its surface are deeper than the night and louder than silence.
