The Chang’an Secrets: Mastering the Winds and Finding the Way

Chang'an has four bureaus: Qianwen, the Wind Bureau, the Water Bureau, and the Fragrance Bureau. After the Qianwen Bureau was struck from the register, the Wind Bureau became the capital's sharpest eye for investigation: listening to the wind to find paths, following the wind to determine direction, tracing trajectories, and examining crossbow marks are all part of its work. When a murder case appears in which “the wind direction completely contradicts the scene,” Yin Nanzhi, a female investigator from the Wind Bureau, is sent to investigate. In the wind-route map, she sees a line that should not exist. By calculating the crossbow's shadow, she discovers that the weapon's range was deliberately altered. And in the trajectory of the wind flags, she reads a kind of wind that “should never have appeared.” The deeper she investigates, the more the case seems to have been deliberately pushed into a “windless realm.” The closer she gets to the truth, the closer she comes to a forbidden route sealed away long ago.
