My Dear Iris

This novel tears apart the stereotype of “the other woman,” telling an epic story of women’s growth through deception, awakening, and rebirth. Rather than falling into the tired “wife versus mistress” trope, it takes Xia Lu and Wang Yiqun, two “victims,” from suspicion and hostility to fighting back side by side. Their alliance breaks through old constraints and offers a powerful portrayal of women supporting women.

Xia Lu’s transformation is especially moving: from the wretched woman clutching the remnants of her design dream during the rainy season, to being swept up in Liu Bo’s tender lies, then rising from the depths of despair to fight back once the truth comes out. Her resolve as she gathers evidence, her clear-headed refusal to tolerate a client’s unreasonable demands, and her sense of release as she runs by the sea: every step is marked by pain, yet each one shines brighter than the last. Wang Yiqun’s growth is just as inspiring. From a withdrawn housewife enduring emotional abuse, to the decisive moment she smashes a crystal vase, and then to the clarity with which she transforms her flower shop into a “healing space,” she shows readers just how much strength can come from finding the courage to leave an unhappy marriage.

The plot is both compelling and grounded in everyday life. Clues such as the mark left by Liu Bo’s wedding ring and the matching iris-patterned umbrellas echo throughout the story, making the collapse of his lies all the more shocking. Conflicts such as running into each other at the hospital during a prenatal checkup and having to call the police when an ex-husband refuses to leave realistically portray how difficult it is for victims to break free. Meanwhile, moments like Xia Lu winning a surfing competition and Wang Yiqun receiving her divorce decree offer a heartwarming sense of healing.

In the end, when Xia Lu presses delete on the beach and runs toward a new life with the sea breeze at her back, the story has gone far beyond romantic entanglements. It gives everyone who has ever fallen in the dark a glimpse of hope, guiding them toward a life by the sea.
