The Age of Demons After Humanity

Amid a crowded field of popular genres, The Bewitching Age After Humanity breaks away from the familiar story of human survivors, weaving a tale of civilization’s redemption that is both brutal and heartwarming through the eyes of nonhuman beings.

The novel imagines that the city ruins left behind after humanity’s disappearance are not entirely barren: streetlights that have not gone out preserve the fading warmth of the old order, while the mechanical arms of a steel-shelled doctor conceal kindness that has yet to cool. Yet the corrosive “rust powder” and frenzied schools of mutated fish allow the shadow of the “bewitching” to close in step by step. This sharp contrast between lingering warmth and ever-present danger makes the desolate setting feel genuinely suffocating, while also laying a convincing foundation for the later “rebuilding of civilization.” Every detail echoes the central theme: the struggle between order and chaos.

The characters are equally unconventional. Gray Fur’s growth from instinctive survival to actively protecting others, the fragile yet steadfast hope symbolized by Warm Light, and even the kindness of the RD-739 robot that surpasses its programming all give the nonhuman characters a power that strikes straight at the heart. Scenes such as a gray-eared hare bringing batteries to a robot and different species teaming up to monitor mutated fish show that “civilization” is no longer humanity’s exclusive label, but a spiritual spark shared by all life.

Through the premise that the “bewitching” stems from the collapse of order, the novel reflects on the dual nature of human civilization: it passes on the warmth of cooperation and empathy, as seen in the guidance of The Community Survival Handbook, while also warning against the consequences of greed and short-sightedness, such as the mutations caused by chemical plant waste. Ultimately, in the struggle against the bewitching, nonhuman life forms build a new civilization in which technology and nature coexist and multiple species govern together.
