Back to My First Wife

The most immediate impression left by Reading Return to the Original Wife is its realism. There are no melodramatic fights or one-dimensional villains, only the plain difficulties and warmth found in marriage.

What moves most is the nuanced portrayal of growth and return. Chen Kai’s transformation doesn’t happen overnight. He isn’t a “perfect husband” who suddenly changes for the better; he carries his flaws and slowly learns how to listen and take responsibility. This down-to-earth change of heart has more power than any romantic gesture.

The story’s depth also comes from moving beyond the single question of whether a couple will get back together, and exploring what “home” means. Lin Wan’s struggle is not just about whether to forgive, but about finding the courage to believe in a home again. Chen Kai changes not only to win back his wife, but also to give his daughter a stable childhood. Even Chen’s mother, who goes from urging them to make peace to offering a sincere apology, and Lin Wan’s friend Zhang Lan, who shifts from telling her not to put up with it to respecting her choice, both express the idea that a home isn’t one person’s responsibility: it is built on everyone’s tolerance and growth.

There is no grand declaration of remarriage at the end, just a family of three together beneath the starlight on the balcony. Chen Kai holds their sleeping daughter, Lin Wan rests her head on his shoulder, and in her hand is a sample copy of the novel bearing her name. In that moment, it becomes clear that “returning to the original wife” isn’t about going back to the past. It is about two people growing and slowly piecing their broken days back together, rediscovering the warmth a home should have: arguments and compromise, and above all, the resolve to stop for each other, no matter how far they have gone.
