Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961), one of the most outstanding writers in the United States, winner of the 1954 Nobel Prize for Literature. "A Farewell to Arms" is one of his major works. In the late stages of World War I, American young man Frederick Henry volunteered to drive an ambulance for the Red Cross and rescue the wounded on the northern Italian front. During a mission, Henry was hit by a cannonball and injured. While recovering from his injuries in Milan Hospital, Henry received careful care from British nurse Catherine, and the two fell in love. After recovering from his injuries, Henry returned to the front line. When he retreated with the Italian troops, he witnessed the cruel scenes of the war. He resolutely left the troops, joined Catherine and fled to Switzerland. As a result, Catherine died in childbirth. Based on his own experience in the war, Hemingway sang a sad and moving elegy with war and love as the main lines. It has been adapted to the screen many times and can be called a classic of modern literature.

"Summer fell on the city of Paris, as dull as a stone. Everyone followed their own emotions or habits as always. The dazzling sunshine in June made these nocturnal animals raise their lost heads. It was time to set off to find a continuation or some meaning for the past winter." Four couples of men and women living in Paris, they are novelists, editors, rich girls, actors, medical students... They love, they sigh, they drink, they cheat. They are also us. The book is almost full of men who are unable to fall in love and women who think they are sober. Their lives seem to be a "long dizzy without a soundtrack", and they can only hit themselves with violent emotions. They pursue desire and joy, or pain or happiness, but in the end they turn into a string of nothings.

"Timeshock" is the final work written by the American postmodernist literary master Vonnegut in 1997. He used the form of science fiction, postmodernism, and humorous and satirical writing to carefully construct a special world, the "timequake": due to a crisis of self-confidence, the space-time unity in the universe suddenly shrank, resulting in a "timequake". He decided to have some fun and bounce the world back to 10 years ago. Everyone is repeating exactly what they have done before under a "delusion of having experienced it before". The stories that make you laugh one after another, and the classic quotes one after another, cleverly make the anti-traditional, non-centered and absurd theme "time earthquake" readable. The author does not make predictions or inventions like normal science fiction novels, but directly points to human nature, and even the destiny and soul of mankind. The resentment between the lines is a combination of helplessness and cynicism. It is a combination of humor and sharpness. It is worthy of being the final masterpiece of Feng's life.

On Christmas Eve before Christmas, at a certain moment, the elevator of the office building was running downwards, and people came up one after another: a designer whose dream was derailed in a siege, a humble and lonely courier, a female white-collar worker worried about her wedding room, an uncle reporter who was alone after divorce, a department manager whose marriage was ruined, people in five living conditions were gathered in a small space. After the elevator door opened, what would happen to them that night? An elevator, five characters, all kinds of chaos, excitement, boredom, ecstasy, sadness, both independent and related to each other. In the novel, although the situations of the protagonists of different classes, ages, and genders are different, their hearts point to the anxiety and uneasiness of the current era. The accidental changes in the fate of the characters and the direction of the story make the whole work full of black style.

Originally she was just a woman, desperately resisting reality and morality. But the story takes place in the small town of Tianhui in the 1910s, and the environment of the specific era expanded the atmosphere of the entire work. By describing the "fluctuations" in the lives of these secular people in the town, it shows the pain, limitations, and sadness that always linger around all living beings. It explores whether external sustenance, such as other people or love, can bring comfort to life itself. All this happened in a remote town. There was a fierce collision, but it seemed like nothing happened... That's why it was like a stagnant water. The author writes about numerous ordinary people in the city and the remote town of Tianhui, but he gets a glimpse of the secrets of the times and human emotions. The essential living conditions of these ordinary people make "Dead Water Waves" a realistic novel that does not create heroes.

"Christopher and His Kind" is the autobiographical masterpiece of the famous British-American novelist Christopher Isherwood. It was adapted into a film of the same name by the BBC, starring "Doctor Who" Matt Smith. The novel records Isherwood's experiences traveling in Europe in the 1930s. From the calm and marginal perspective of a "foreigner" and "minority", it records the chaos from the inception to the outbreak of World War II. It includes the apocalyptic scene of Berlin, which was seething with all kinds of evil, chaos, and violence under the shadow of the Nazis; a sweet but hopeless relationship with the worker boy Heinz; the battlefield experience of walking with Auden, life and death in China hanging by a thread; and interesting anecdotes in the literary and film circles during his travels in Europe, and his interactions with celebrities such as Maugham, Forster, Woolf, Thomas Mann's family, and Brecht. Isherwood is extremely good at capturing personality traits accurately, all of which form a unique character map unique to him. His works are richly autobiographical and constitute wonderful social satirical fables. Isherwood and the famous poet Auden were lifelong friends, and this book also records the unique bond between the two.

"The Waves" is a novel written by British female writer Virginia Woolf in 1931. After a long period of literary exploration, the author achieved an accurate portrayal and expression of the images in his mind, and used highly symbolic brushstrokes to depict the inner monologues of six characters: Bernard, Neville, Louis, Susan, Jenny and Rhoda from childhood to old age. The author used six parallel streams of consciousness to express the six types of consciousness and the growth experience of the "six eras of man" respectively, expressing different perceptions of time, life and death.

President Kennedy and the United States were drawn into the jungles of Vietnam. The success of the moon landing had just diluted the gloom over the nation, and the assassination of John F. Kennedy shocked the country again. The hippie trend and the proliferation of drugs changed the thinking of a generation. The assassination of Martin Luther King completely aroused racial conflicts. The establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the United States made Nixon a transcendent figure, and the "Watergate Incident" made him infamous. The system is still progressing and life is still improving, but the former glory and dreams eventually become memories in a peaceful life.

The "Beat Generation" entered the stage of history, and "McCarthyism" raged in the political arena. Rosa Parks became the "last straw" that suppressed racial discrimination in the United States. The spirit of entertainment first, the anti-communist wave and the anti-racist conflict all combined to form the United States during this period. The United States, which is noisy and advancing, does not realize that promoting its own prosperity may be regarded as an intolerable arrogance.

This book is a continuation of "Ma Ruifang's Quotes on the Dream of Red Mansions". In this work, Professor Ma uses humorous, vivid and interesting narration to analyze all the hidden aspects of Wang Xifeng, the most important character in "A Dream of Red Mansions" besides Bao Dai. It fully demonstrates Professor Ma's profound foundation in classical literature and superb knowledge of red studies. Through a new interpretation of Wang Xifeng, the work, on the one hand, explores and understands the character's personality traits and true thoughts from the clues surrounding Sister Feng's story and character activities; on the other hand, it explores and speculates on Cao Xueqin's artistic conception and creative intentions inside and outside the text. This book is not only a beautiful article that comprehensively decrypts, interprets and analyzes Wang Xifeng, but also an open-ended text with a sense of exploration and suspense. It is not only a rigorous academic work on red studies, but also an easy-to-understand, relaxed and interesting academic essay. It has both academic value and readability.

The story of Adam and Eve is like the shadow of human beings as a whole, which continues to exist in religion, literature, art, and philosophy. It is not only a hymn to human responsibility, but also a dark allegory about the tragic situation of human beings. Stephen Greenblatt builds a bridge between human origins and modern civilization by tracing back the story's immense value, revealing its rich allegory, sexual and moral conflicts, virulent misogyny, and profound moral insights, all the while tracing the story's post-Darwinian persistence in contemporary times, triggering our thinking about issues such as freedom of marriage, women's rights, and the measure of freedom in today's society.
