About This Novel
In the 1860s, Liu Xiaohe, a seventeen-year-old girl from the Jianghan Plain in China, was sold to a human trafficker by her father for the price of two bags of potatoes. The traffickers resold Xiaohe to a Chinese man in the Canadian town of Barkerville as his wife. White people and Chinese people live at opposite ends of the town of Barkerville. The two ethnic groups are estranged because they do not understand each other and have been in a state of hostility for a long time. The Chinese woman named Flo changed the atmosphere in the town, and the two ethnic groups began to communicate carefully. Flo, a hard-working woman, is the earliest woman in town to get up every day. When she died, the whole town set up a tombstone for her: "Sleep, Flo, sleep" - because she could finally rest peacefully.
