About This Novel

Upton Sinclair (1878-1968) was born into a declining aristocratic family in the United States. He began writing articles for popular publications at the age of fifteen to support himself in college, and later wrote articles for the socialist propaganda weekly "A Call to Reason". During this time, his editor encouraged him to write a book on the theme of "wage slavery." So Upton Sinclair went to the Chicago Slaughterhouse District for seven weeks and wrote "The Slaughterhouse" in 1906. The novel describes the immigrant Jurgis family who came to work in the slaughterhouse district with the American dream in mind. Unfortunately, the evil capitalism squeezed out the blood and sweat of everyone here, and finally plunged everyone in the family into a terrible disaster. At the end of the novel, Jurgis's class consciousness is awakened and he decides to devote his life to the socialist movement.
