Renting Out the Rest of My Life

A young man gets dumped by a jerk, drinks and cries his eyes out, then wanders aimlessly through the streets of Hong Kong.

He spots a piece of paper on a wall, with bold, wild brush-written characters: "For rent or sale: the rest of my life." A phone number is written underneath.

This flimsy scrap of paper instantly captures the young man's imagination. He stands on the street, staring at it in a daze for a long time.

How romantic, he thinks.

After staring at it tipsily for ages, he gives in to an impulse and calls the number on the paper.

The call connects, and the first thing he says is, "Hello, I'd like to spend the rest of my life with you!"

The other end is silent.

The young man clarifies, "I saw your notice: 'For rent or sale: the rest of my life.' Are you renting it out or selling it?"

The silence lasts even longer.

The young man says, "Hello... are you still there?"

Finally, the other person speaks. "Yu is my surname."

His voice is deep and detached, that of a mature man.

It turns out that in Hong Kong, people commonly address men as Mr. [surname] using the suffix "sheng."

So "Yu Sheng" means Mr. Yu.
