Haunted by the Lotus Man

Ping Yu has an yin-heavy birth chart and is fated to be surrounded by ghosts. She was born able to see both the living and the dead.

A Taoist told her that at twelve, she would face a deadly trial.

Just then, her father heard that his brother's child had gone to study under an immortal. So Ping Yu was sent there to stay for a while and make a good impression, in the hope of finding a way to avert her fate.

The good news: that child was Nezha.

The bad news: he was a mischievous little boy, and he discovered that she attracted ghosts.

And so...

When Ping Yu walked along the road, she was dragged off to lure lost ghosts. When she was asleep at home, she was woken up to summon wild ghosts. Even when she went to the dining hall to eat, she had to help lure hungry ghosts...

She spent half a year being used as bait.

Until one day, Nezha caused a huge disaster.

He killed a dragon from the Eastern Sea, stripping its skin and pulling out its tendons. He even plucked off scales to protect Ping Yu.

It rained for three days in Qiantang Pass. The raging waves swallowed the fishermen whole. To quell the Dragon King's fury, Nezha cut out his bones to return them to his father and his flesh to return it to his mother.

Nezha died, and Ping Yu thought she would never see him again.

But she never expected that, when she burned paper offerings for him, thinking of their time together, the boy would appear as lively as ever before his gravestone.

"Lin Pingyu." Nezha gritted his teeth and asked, "Why didn't you accept the scales I gave you?"

Ping Yu: ...

Oh, right. I forgot I attract ghosts.

During the time Nezha was dead, only Ping Yu could see him.

He grew even more temperamental. He insisted on sleeping in Ping Yu's bed and wouldn't let her leave his sight for even a moment during the day.

Ping Yu could barely eat or sleep.

People say the King of Hell is easy to deal with, but little ghosts are a pain. Nezha was strong but small. It was hard to tell which category he belonged to.

Later, Ping Yu's fated trial arrived right on schedule.

To protect her, Nezha borrowed the spiritual energy of heaven and earth and forcibly took physical form, nearly destroying his soul.

Taiyi Zhenren took him away, placing him in a lotus and raising him in the Heavenly Pond.

Ping Yu was rescued by the Taoist as well and devoted herself to cultivating the immortal arts.

Three years passed after that parting.

On the day Ping Yu and Nezha reunited in Xiqi, Ping Yu had just come of age.

She followed her master into battle and defeated the generals of Chaoge to prove her allegiance.

By then, Nezha had become a vanguard officer. He led her outside, took her handkerchief, and claimed it for himself.

Ping Yu: Today I came of age. I'm no longer a child. A handkerchief is a personal item, and exchanging one in private doesn't seem appropriate.

Who would have thought the Red Armillary Sash would suddenly spring into action, tying her up tight? Ping Yu struggled in vain and could only watch as Nezha approached step by step.

"I know a woman must come of age before she can marry. It's been three years, and you've made little progress in anything else, but you've certainly grown a lot wilder."

The rich scent of lotus made her mind grow hazy. All she could see were eyes tinged with golden flames, pinning her down like a beast. The beautiful young man waved her handkerchief and leaned over her, smiling faintly as he said:

"Lin Pingyu, who else would you want to marry besides me?"
