I attended my own funeral. It was quite a novel experience.
The hit singer Li Youhe was found dead at home on the eve of an awards ceremony. The police ruled it a suicide.
The funeral was arranged by Li Youhe's longtime friend in the entertainment industry, while her family never showed up at all.
Li Youhe, hailed as the songstress of her generation, had a funeral attended by countless powerful figures. Yet two high school girls with no connection to her appeared unexpectedly.
"Jiao Qingyue, let's go back."
They had skipped school to come. They went to the same school, sat at the same desk, shared a dorm room, and were also...
With red-rimmed eyes, Jiao Qingyue turned to look at Nan Zhou.
Now they were strangers.
Jiao Qingyue was no longer Jiao Qingyue. She was Li Youhe, reborn.
"She didn't kill herself."
Jiao Qingyue repeated this "fact," which the world had accepted, to no avail. She knew no one would believe her, but she still wanted to say it.
Nan Zhou nodded. "I know."
Jiao Qingyue thought she was only trying to comfort her.
-
Jiao Qingyue had lost some of her memories. She couldn't remember what had happened before she died. All she knew was that the award she was about to receive meant a great deal to her.
All she knew was that she would never kill herself.
But uncovering the truth was far too difficult for Jiao Qingyue. No one would believe what she said, and if she went to the police, they would probably think she was on drugs.
So Jiao Qingyue had no choice but to try to get closer to the person she used to be.
She thought the obstacles in her way were Jiao Qingyue's family and a society riddled with evil. She never expected Nan Zhou to become her greatest obstacle.
She watched the person who had been so wonderful in Jiao Qingyue's memories take a stand against her. "No matter what you say, I'm going to do it."
Nan Zhou only gave a disdainful smile. "She's already dead. What's the point of doing all this?"
"The killer is still at large. How can it be pointless?"
"But you wanted this death too."
Jiao Qingyue frowned. She thought Nan Zhou had gone mad, but a moment later, she suddenly understood. "Wait, who did you say...?"
"You. Li Youhe."
"You..."
Jiao Qingyue stepped back in shock. She was about to argue when Nan Zhou continued, "Only Li Youhe could have finished that song. The real Li Youhe."
Jiao Qingyue knew which song she meant, the one Li Youhe hadn't finished before she died.
Jiao Qingyue had written it.
"Only Li Youhe could write that song."
"Only Li Youhe could tell whether that song was genuine."
"And only Li Youhe could write two identical songs at the same time."
Li Youhe's style was so distinctive that any imitation or counterfeit could be spotted at a glance.
The praise heaped on Li Youhe by the world was no baseless rumor or undeserved fame. Even after Li Youhe died, the only person who could stand against her was herself.
They lived in two different bodies, yet had the same thoughts and souls.
Their memories were both incomplete, but in different ways. The only thing they had in common was that neither remembered what had happened before Li Youhe died.
They were the only two people in the world who didn't believe Li Youhe had killed herself, yet Jiao Qingyue was still the only one trying to uncover the truth.
Neither of them would back down. Each wanted the other to yield, and the only possible outcome was that both would suffer.
