Do You Like My Mom? 2

Older woman | adoptive mother and daughter | 16-year age gap | bittersweet romance | rekindled love

Cai Yuandai and Wen Zhijun kept their two-year relationship a secret from everyone.

They loved each other deeply, and they both knew they couldn't live without one another.

But after two years, they still broke up.

After graduating from university, Cai Yuandai followed Wen Zhijun's example from years ago and moved abroad alone, leaving Wen Zhijun behind in China, at the center of a storm of public opinion.

When they met again five years later, a sense of estrangement lingered between them.

Wen Zhijun watched as the young woman, now so different from the girl she'd once known, raised her glass. "Thank you for joining us, Ms. Wen. Here's to a successful partnership."

Wen Zhijun returned the toast and spoke the first words she'd said since their reunion: "Here's to a successful partnership."

The adoptive daughter who used to cling to her side was now a business partner worthy of sharing a drink with her. But the young woman across from her was still in her prime, while Wen Zhijun was already past the age when it was appropriate to be in love with her.

Cai Yuandai was as youthful and impulsive as ever. Once she had made up her mind, nothing Wen Zhijun said could change it.

But Wen Zhijun could no longer ease her guilt by kneeling for a day at Cai Yuandai's birth mother's grave, as she had before.

She and Cai Yuandai no longer had any relationship. She couldn't hold Cai Yuandai back.

So she thought, and retreated.

But Cai Yuandai kept advancing, pressing closer and closer until Wen Zhijun had nowhere left to retreat.

She said, "Mom, I'm ready to accept this."

But Wen Zhijun looked at her, cool and indifferent. "I'm not."
