Song Yunyi runs an antique shop. He might go three years without a customer, then make enough in one day to live on for the next three. He enjoys a leisurely life, until one day he wakes up inside a book as the magistrate of a remote county.
The county office is dilapidated, the bailiffs are incompetent, and there is no clerk, so he has to hire one himself.
Song Yunyi sits in the street holding a recruitment notice. Beneath a locust tree, a white-robed woman with a long tongue raises her ashen face and glides toward him, saying she was wrongfully killed and begging him to clear her name.
A statue in the City God Temple says someone stole its arm and asks him to catch the thief.
A wandering infant spirit asks him to help find its way home...
Song Yunyi: "..."
Only then does Song Yunyi, who was born with yin-yang eyes, realize he's transmigrated into a supernatural story.
He has to solve cases involving the living and crack cases involving ghosts.
Song Yunyi: "What, I have to work two jobs now?"
Fortunately, someone finally comes to apply for the clerk position. Song Yunyi sees the handsome young man and immediately sits up straight. "Welcome to the county office family! We have a bright future ahead of us, and you can put your talents to use here."
The young man: "Uh... I just came out to buy a book. I'm only passing by."
Song Yunyi: "..."
No way. Someone finally showed up. He's got to keep him here.
He continues, "Work as my clerk. Room and board are included, and I'll teach you skills that will benefit you for life. Give it a try."
The other man's eyes light up. "But will you teach me how to pass the civil service exams?"
Song Yunyi: "Ahem... I'll teach you how to summon ghosts."
The young man: "..."
Song Yunyi: "Don't go! Once you've learned it, you can summon famous ministers and top scholars from every dynasty. You can ask them anything you like!"
The young man stops.
With a bang of the court's wooden block and a straightened hat, Song Yunyi settles into life as magistrate.
Later, adored by the people and protected by ghosts, he finds his county blessed with good weather and peace through all four seasons. Song Yunyi decides he's actually doing a pretty good job as magistrate.
But Xu Zhiqing, who somehow ended up as his clerk, is a little confused.
He hasn't seen any famous ministers or top scholars, but he has seen plenty of headless ghosts appearing at his bedside in the middle of the night and hanging ghosts dangling from the rafters.
It dawns on him that he's been swindled.
Later, when Song Yunyi coaxes him into bed, he becomes certain he really has been swindled!
He challenges the man beside him: "Were you recruiting a clerk back then, or looking for a spouse?"
Song Yunyi smiles and leans over him. "Both."
Top is the pursuer. A slow-burn slice-of-life story, with the magistrate as the top and the clerk as the bottom.
The story mainly deals with supernatural cases and the lively, bickering daily life at the county office.
Theme: Cherish life and stay optimistic!
