The Spider's Palace, 1994

She had been sickly since childhood. Her parents consulted a fortune-teller, who said she was destined to face a calamity and needed a "spirit" to protect her.

A ferry carried her and her older brother to stay with relatives in Southeast Asia. Their relative was Aunt Fang, a famous spirit medium in Ho Chi Minh City.

Her brother was two years older, but far more mature, like a little adult even at such a young age.

He treated his little sister wonderfully, helping her with her studies, taking her out, and always watching over and protecting her.

But she always felt there was something strange about him. His cheeks were pale, his expression stiff, and when he smiled, he looked like a lifeless plastic doll.

Aunt Fang treated her like her own daughter, but when she looked at her brother, there was a hint of fear in her eyes...

Later, her brother went to Singapore for university, while she returned to Hong Kong to attend Secondary Five.

But even after she started university, her brother still hadn't come home, and there was no word from him. She asked her parents, "Why hasn't my brother even called?"

Her father looked terrified. Her mother wept without stopping.

Her mother said, "We were so foolish. He isn't your brother at all. It's an 'it.' When you were little, the fortune-teller said you wouldn't live past five. We were bewitched and went to Bangkok to seek the protection of some so-called spirit child. It's all right, it's all right. Your father and I have already hired someone to send 'it' away. It's all over..."

What spirit child? What did they mean, send it away? Was her eldest brother human or a ghost?

She wanted to investigate what had happened. Fortunately, fate was on her side, and she didn't have to lift a finger. Just before she graduated from university, her "brother" came back.

"I'm back for your graduation ceremony." He was handsome and refined, unfailingly polite. Smiling, he appeared outside her apartment, where she lived alone.

Outside the window, the rainy night was dark and eerie.

Set in the 1990s.

A comic artist and a ghost who has grown a heart.

In a way, the male lead is the female lead's child bridegroom, hehe...
