At thirteen, Wu got a new game: collect spirits and raise them to become a Pokémon Master.
On the character selection screen, his eyes were drawn to a little figure with a weird bun and bangs. It looked kind of strange, so he decided to raise it!
Wu spotted a pretty dress and put it on the paper-doll character.
[Your Jie dislikes your outfit choice. Affection -1. Affection too low.]
In a fit of anger, Wu bought every outfit in the game and changed his clothes every day.
To earn skill points, Wu had the kid grind low-level Poke Balls every day.
[Your Jie thinks the Poke Balls taste terrible. Affection -1.]
Wu stayed up all night grinding cooking skills, then made Poke Balls in every flavor.
He did daily quests and ground stats, while the kid kept rushing between the black and red factions.
[Your Jie thinks the world is too dark. Will to live -1. If will to live reaches zero, the game is over.]
In a rage, Wu smashed the game's liquor factory to pieces and sent the kid to a normal school, trying to save him.
At long last, he'd maxed out affection. Wu eagerly chose the proposal route.
[Your Jie rejected your proposal. Game over. Congratulations on unlocking the achievement: All That Work for Nothing.]
The next second, the game icon on his phone turned gray.
Wu: !!!
Three days later, Wu started at Jujutsu High.
In the classroom, he saw a boy with the exact same weird bun and bangs as the paper-doll character. Furious, he grabbed the boy by the collar and demanded:
Which story choice didn't you like? How could you reject my proposal?
Twelve-year-old Jie felt as if he had been targeted by a god.
As soon as he left school, the god would change him into a gorgeous little dress.
It would urge him to fight curses, force-feed him cursed spirits, and make him rescue police officers, defuse bombs, rob liquor factories, and work and study without end, with only four hours of basic sleep.
The stronger he became, the more he fell apart. Was the god controlling his life an idiot? He was a human being who needed sleep and rest!
After he got so angry that he ran away from home, the god became gentler.
It picked clothes he liked, made cursed spirits to suit his tastes, and cleared away everything he disliked.
Finally, the god gave him a ring and proposed.
Ha! Had it gone crazy?
Young Jie ignored the flutter in his heart and clicked reject. The god disappeared.
No god would ever answer him or understand him again.
Not until he reached Jujutsu High, where the god grabbed him by the collar...
