An NPC Identity Card from the Start

He transmigrated into a game world. Other players started out by awakening their talents, but he started out with an NPC identity card.

Not only was the NPC identity card unusable, but he had already been cast out of his family for being “talentless.”

It only took one failed talent awakening to go from a noble young master to a refugee.

Cassius: ...This is ridiculous.

So he hurried to the protagonist’s birthplace to become the protagonist’s childhood friend. The protagonist’s backstory in the game was already tragic enough, so surely things couldn’t get any worse. He could just live comfortably by the protagonist’s side.

Cassius: I’m sure the protagonist will protect me.

Cassius: ...Probably?

By the time the game’s main story finally began and his NPC identity card became usable, he was nearly dead. The protagonist’s hometown had been massacred, and the protagonist, its sole survivor, set off on the game’s main quest, consumed by hatred. After he left, Cassius, wearing his NPC identity card, crawled out from a pile of corpses.

The good news: He was still alive, and his golden finger had come online.

The bad news: His NPC identity card made him a demon, putting him in the same faction as the demon that had massacred the village.

Even worse: The protagonist mistook him for the demon that had massacred the village.

Cassius: ...I’m doomed.

After the full release of the immersive game Beneath the Gray Mist, players discovered that the main story was completely different from the beta:

The protagonist’s village had been massacred, the protagonist had gained a childhood friend, and the once-sunny protagonist had become gloomy and taciturn...

Game forum:

“The developers are so cruel!”

“My little sunshine is gone just like that...”

“So the beta was just a dream for the players? Developers, how could you go this far and make us suffer like this?”

“Cassius, my childhood friend! We’d known each other for less than a week, and I never expected you to die so suddenly TAT”

“Revenge! We have to get revenge!”

The players’ flames of vengeance surged higher and higher. After witnessing it all...

Cassius: ...I’m even more doomed.
